Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: the Modern Landscape
Exhibition Graphic Design
Art Institute of Chicago/2022–23
The design identity of the 2023 show Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: the Modern Landscape reflects the ideas of leisure, industry, and modernity, which were captured by Vincent van Gogh, Charles Angrand, Emile Bernard, George Seurat, and Paul Signac in the outskirts of Paris in the late 19th century.
The original title “Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: Along the Seine” inspired some exhibition graphics–such as the timeline and the introduction to the exhibition video. Contemporary typography was paired with an unexpected color palette of gray and green to represent the innovative techniques developed by Van Gogh and his contemporaries, but still keep the identity of the show aligned with the post-impressionistic period.
Curated by: Jacquelyn N. Coutré; Curatorial Assistant: Jena Carvana; Creative Director: Michael Neault; Exhibition Architecture: Barbara Materia; Art Director (video): Kirill Mazor; Graphic Design: Vitalii Emelianov; Marketing Campaign: Leo Burnett; Digital Campaign: Vitalii Emelianov; Typefaces: Parnaso, Halyard Text.
